This is the story of a child treated for undernutrition.
Malnourished children were 11 times more likely to die than well-nourished children. The result is that malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death in children.
Proper nutrition is the cornerstone of child survival and development. However, many children, especially those who are poor or vulnerable, do not receive the nutrition they need and the support they need to survive, develop, and thrive. Emaciation affects 47 million children worldwide. In children with extremely thin bodies, the immune system is weakened, increasing their death risk. These children require immediate emergency care and treatment.
Providing patients with peanut butter called “therapeutic ready-to-eat nutritional foods” has been shown to be an effective method of treating and coping with malnutrition. Under the framework of the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund, UNICEF cooperates with the China International Development Cooperation Agency to provide treatment for children suffering from acute malnutrition in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal and South Sudan.

Measuring a child’s upper arm circumference is one of the ways to identify severe acute malnutrition. Healthcare workers can identify severe acute malnutrition with the help of a tool designed for this purpose: green for good, yellow for malnutrition, and red for severe malnutrition.
Children with wasting can usually be treated with therapeutic ready-to-eat nutritional foods, and those who receive treatment can gradually recover in their own home and community, rather than in a medical facility. Eleven-month-old Janti Victor has participated in a four-week UNICEF nutrition programme in Yambio, South Sudan. Jenty’s mother, Margaret Michael, said “She had diarrhoea for days and couldn’t absorb the food we gave her, so she became malnourished.” Janti was taken to a UNICEF nutrition center, where she was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition.

“In the beginning, Genty wasn’t in the mood. After taking the therapeutic RTE nutrition food, she quickly regained her energy.”
While Gendy’s mid-to-upper arm circumference is still in the red range, she has changed a lot and now has the energy to play and interact with others. As long as the mid-upper arm circumference test strip remains green, she will take the therapeutic ready-to-eat nutritional food.
